It came along at just the right moment to be shunted aside completely by the Dark Side of the Moon juggernaut that followed right on its heels. It was born at an awkward time, when Floyd was transitioning from being a spaced out band with a loyal UK/European following to bona fide worldwide superstars. Obscured by Clouds is the forgotten red-headed stepchild of Pink Floyd albums. That said, those inspired musical ideas are there, just not in the requisite amounts for greatness, making the album an enjoyable and rewarding (if not essential) listen. On the other hand, Obscured by Clouds has the brevity, but is kept from being numbered among Pink Floyd’s greatest by too many not-so-great songs, and by the fact that its inspired musical ideas are too few and far between. With DSOM, Floyd was savvy enough to keep the tracks relatively concise and bite-size, giving the songs enough time to develop and get set up without wearing out their welcome à la “Dogs” or “Echoes”. While “Dogs” has several moments of musical inspiration, it doesn’t have 20 minutes of them. The problem was worse on the next album, Animals, where the great songs and inspired musical ideas were spread way too thin, resulting in an album that would have been much better if it was half as long. Conversely, looking at the album on the other side of DSOM, Wish You Were Here had nothing but great songs in addition to an abundance of inspired musical ideas, but lacked brevity, with those inspired musical ideas spread across too many minutes, especially on “Shine On You Crazy Diamond Parts XVKIII through HXVZQQQ”.
And while there are some inspired musical ideas, I doubt that anyone would argue there is an abundance of them. Looking at the album that preceded it, Obscured by Clouds had the brevity, but while it had some great songs, it can hardly be said it had “nothing but great songs”. To illustrate the point, let’s look at the albums on either side of DSOM. So what does make it so much better than the other Pink Floyd albums? I’ve got my theory, and that is that there are three qualities that put DSOM head and shoulders above the others:Ģ. Ultimate Classic Rock is hardly alone, pretty much every Pink Floyd album ranking ever, from formal rankings in music trade magazines to college roommates sitting in their dorm rooms ranking Pink Floyd albums while smoking doobies, has placed Dark Side unanimously at #1. If you don’t believe me and you have time to waste, check the rankings of Pink Floyd albums on Ultimate Classic Rock ( ), surely the definitive source for determining the greatest Pink Floyd album (however, if you think you have time to waste, you’ve either never heard “Time” or you didn’t get the message). There are plenty of classic and almost classic Pink Floyd albums – what is it that makes Dark Side of the Moon the best of them? That it is the best of them is pretty much axiomatic of course – like the Beatles being the greatest band ever or President Orange Face being the worst ever American President, there are things that are so widely accepted as plain and simple truth by all intelligent people that there is hardly any point in discussing them.
